Living in Milton
Milton is a town just south of Boston, between the Neponset River and the Blue Hills. It borders Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park in Boston, as well as Quincy, Randolph and Canton. Settled in 1640 as part of Dorchester, it became its own town in 1662. The area along the river, known as Lower Mills, was home to New England’s first paper mill and the Walter Baker chocolate factory. The Suffolk Resolves were signed in Milton in 1774, and President George H. W. Bush was born on Adams Street in 1924.
Milton’s main areas include Milton Village at Lower Mills, East Milton Square, Milton Hill, Brush Hill and Upper Canton Avenue.
Homes you will find
- Single-family homes, which make up most of the town’s housing
- Older and historic homes that reflect the town’s long history
- A smaller number of condos and multi-unit buildings; the town approved a new multifamily zoning change in 2025
Getting around
The MBTA Mattapan Line, a historic trolley that is part of the Red Line, has four stops in Milton: Milton, Central Avenue, Valley Road and Capen Street. The line runs between Mattapan and Ashmont, much of it along the Neponset River, and riders transfer at Ashmont to Red Line trains into Boston. It still uses restored PCC streetcars from the 1940s. Routes 28 and 138 run north to south through town, and I-93 loops around the southern and eastern edges.
Parks, the Blue Hills and everyday life
Milton is home to part of the Blue Hills Reservation, including Great Blue Hill, and to the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, which keeps the oldest continuous weather records in the nation. The town also has Turner’s Pond and many small kettle ponds. Historic sites include the Eustis Estate on Canton Avenue, the Captain Robert Bennet Forbes House on Adams Street, which is open for tours, and Governor Hutchinson’s Field, owned by the Trustees of Reservations.
Curry College is located in Milton. Milton runs its own public school system, and families can contact Milton Public Schools directly for school information.
