Living in Peabody

Peabody is a North Shore city between Lynnfield, Danvers, Salem and Lynn. It was once a major center of New England’s leather industry, and people still call it the Leather City. Today it is a mostly residential city with a historic downtown, busy shopping corridors and quieter neighborhoods.

The downtown area sits in the eastern part of the city. South Peabody lies south of the center, and West Peabody, on the other side of the highways, is a suburban area that was mostly farmland until the 1950s.

Homes you will find

  • Single-family homes, including capes, ranches, colonials and split-levels
  • Two-family homes and smaller multi-families closer to downtown
  • Condo and townhouse communities in several parts of the city

Getting around

Peabody is a driver’s city. Route 1, Route 128 and I-95 all meet here, which gives quick access north, south and into Boston, and Route 114 is a major local road. Several MBTA bus routes serve the city, and the nearest commuter rail station is in Salem, on the Newburyport/Rockport Line to North Station. Logan Express buses to the airport stop at the Northshore Mall.

Parks and everyday life

Brooksby Farm is a city-owned working farm and conservation area, known for pick-your-own fruit and its farm store. The Independence Greenway is a rail trail for walking and biking that is part of the larger Border to Boston trail network. Crystal Lake and Spring Pond add more green space. The Northshore Mall is one of the region’s largest shopping centers. Peabody runs its own public school system.

Who Peabody suits

Peabody is a good fit for buyers who want a suburban single-family or condo with easy highway access, people who work along Route 128 or on the North Shore, and move-up buyers coming from closer-in cities. Commuters who rely on transit should plan around the bus or drive to the Salem train.
