Living in Revere

Revere is a coastal city about five miles northeast of downtown Boston, facing Massachusetts Bay. It borders Winthrop, Chelsea, East Boston, Everett, Malden, Saugus and Lynn. The area was first known as Rumney Marsh and was part of Boston and then Chelsea. It became the town of North Chelsea in 1846, was renamed Revere in 1871 in honor of Paul Revere, and voted to become a city in 1914. Railroads built in the 1800s, including the Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad, drew visitors and new residents to the shore.

Revere Beach opened on July 12, 1896, as the first public beach in the United States. It runs for more than three miles, and the Revere Beach Reservation, designed by landscape architect Charles Eliot and managed by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, is a National Historic Landmark.

Homes you will find

  • Victorian-era houses and cottages in Beachmont and on Young’s Hill
  • Colonial Revival three-deckers and two-family homes, many from about 1900 to 1915, around Young’s Hill and on streets such as Lincoln, Proctor and Mountain
  • Bungalows and hip-roofed single- and two-family houses in inland neighborhoods
  • Single- and multi-family homes in Point of Pines, Oak Island and West Revere
  • Apartment and condo buildings, including high-rises and newer buildings along Revere Beach Boulevard

Getting around

Revere is the end of the MBTA Blue Line, with three stations in the city: Wonderland, Revere Beach and Beachmont. The Blue Line runs through East Boston and under the harbor to downtown Boston. U.S. Route 1 and state Routes 1A, 16, 60, 107 and 145 all pass through Revere, and Logan Airport is just to the south in East Boston.

Beach, marsh and everyday life

Each summer since 2004, the Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting Festival has drawn large crowds to the beach. Kelly’s Roast Beef, founded in Revere in 1951, still has its main location on the beachfront. Rumney Marsh Reservation, a state park of about 600 acres in Revere and Saugus, protects salt marsh along the city’s northern side, and the Northern Strand Community Trail passes through Revere on its way between Everett and Lynn.

Broadway is the city’s main civic and business street, home to City Hall, and the Squire Road area in West Revere has shopping plazas, restaurants and hotels. The Revere Public Library is a Carnegie library that dates to 1903. On the site of the former Wonderland Greyhound Park, the city broke ground on a new Revere High School in 2025. Revere runs its own public school system, and families can contact Revere Public Schools directly for school details.

Who Revere suits

Revere suits buyers who want to be near the ocean and still ride the Blue Line downtown, condo buyers drawn to beachfront buildings, and investors looking at two- and three-family homes close to Boston and Logan Airport.
