Living in Saugus

Saugus is a suburban town just north of Revere and Malden, between Lynn and Wakefield. It has a long history: the Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site preserves the spot the National Park Service calls the birthplace of the American iron and steel industry, with tours, a museum and nature trails along the Saugus River. Route 1 runs through town with shopping and restaurants, while most of Saugus is made up of quieter residential neighborhoods such as Cliftondale, Saugus Center, East Saugus and North Saugus.

Homes you will find

  • Single-family homes, the main housing type, including capes, ranches, colonials and split-levels
  • Some two-family homes
  • Condo and townhouse communities, including newer developments near Route 1

Getting around

Saugus has no subway or commuter rail station, so most residents drive. Route 1 connects south toward Boston and north to I-95, and Route 107 links to Lynn and Revere. MBTA bus routes connect Saugus to Malden Center on the Orange Line, to Lynn and to Boston. The Orange Line at Malden Center and Oak Grove, and the Blue Line at Wonderland in Revere, are a short drive away.

Parks and everyday life

Breakheart Reservation, a state park of about 650 acres shared with Wakefield, has two freshwater lakes, hiking trails and fishing. Rumney Marsh Reservation offers birding and walking, and the Saugus River adds water views. The town opened a combined middle-high school building in recent years, and families can get school details directly from Saugus Public Schools. Square One Mall and the Route 1 corridor cover everyday shopping.

Who Saugus suits

Saugus is a good fit for buyers who want a single-family home with a yard close to Boston, families moving up from nearby cities like Revere, Malden, Lynn and Everett, and anyone who enjoys trails and open space. Buyers who commute by transit should plan around buses or a short drive to the Orange or Blue Line.
