Living in Somerville

Somerville sits right next to Boston and Cambridge and is one of the most densely built cities in New England. Life here is organized around its squares, each with its own shops and restaurants. Davis Square is known for the historic Somerville Theatre. Union Square has Bow Market and a strong food scene. Assembly Square has outlet shopping, offices and newer apartment buildings along the Mystic River. Ball, Magoun, Gilman and Teele squares add more local flavor.

Homes you will find

  • Two-family homes and triple-deckers, which make up much of the city’s housing
  • Condos, many created by converting older two- and three-family homes
  • Newer condo and apartment buildings near Assembly Square and the new Green Line stations
  • A smaller number of single-family homes

Getting around

Somerville’s transit options grew a lot with the Green Line Extension. Union Square station opened in March 2022, and the Medford Branch opened in December 2022 with East Somerville, Gilman Square, Magoun Square and Ball Square stations. The Orange Line stops at Assembly, and the Red Line stops at Davis. I-93 and Route 28 run along the eastern side of the city.

Parks and everyday life

The Somerville Community Path is a popular walking and biking route. Its extension along the Green Line opened in June 2023, linking to the Minuteman trail network and toward Cambridge and Boston. The city has many small parks, playgrounds and community gardens, plus farmers markets and arts events. Somerville runs its own public school system, and Tufts University’s campus sits on the Medford-Somerville line.

Who Somerville suits

Somerville is ideal for people who want city living, walkable squares and an easy commute to Boston or Cambridge without a car. It also attracts buyers who want a condo close to transit and investors interested in two- and three-family homes with steady rental demand.
