Living in Woburn

Woburn is a city about nine miles north of Boston, bordered by Wilmington, Reading, Stoneham, Winchester, Lexington and Burlington. It was first settled in 1640 near Horn Pond and incorporated in 1642, and the towns of Wilmington, Burlington and Winchester were later carved out of it. The Middlesex Canal opened through Woburn in 1803 and the Boston and Lowell Railroad followed in 1835. Woburn later became a city, and the arrival of Route 128 in 1951 and I-93 in 1963 turned it into a major crossroads north of Boston.

Historic sites include the Benjamin Thompson House and the Woburn Public Library, built as the Winn Memorial Library.

Getting around

Woburn’s main transit hub is the Anderson Regional Transportation Center, reached from I-93. Anderson/Woburn is a stop on the MBTA Lowell Line, with trains to North Station in Boston, and also on Amtrak’s Downeaster to Portland, Maine. Massport’s Logan Express runs buses from Anderson to Logan Airport. MBTA bus routes run along Main Street, Montvale Avenue, Lexington Street and Cambridge Road. Drivers have both I-93 and Route 128/I-95 in the city. The Mishawum station has been closed since 2020.

Horn Pond and everyday life

Horn Pond, about half a mile south of Woburn Center, is a 116-acre pond where the city’s first settlers lived. Paths circle the pond and connect its two city-run boat ramps, at Lake Avenue and at Ice House Park, and much of the shoreline is open for fishing. Only electric motors are allowed on the water, and the state stocks trout in spring and fall. The pond area was landscaped by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Woburn runs its own public school system, and families can contact Woburn Public Schools directly for school details.

Who Woburn suits

Woburn is a good fit for commuters who drive I-93 or I-95, people who travel often and value easy airport and Amtrak access, and buyers looking at a wide mix of single-families, two-families and condos. It also appeals to anyone who wants a pond with walking paths close to home.
